Study Examines Health Benefits Risks of Electrolyzed Water
ข่าว บริษัท ล่าสุดเกี่ยวกับ Study Examines Health Benefits Risks of Electrolyzed Water

Have you been captivated by claims about "alkaline ionized water" and its miraculous health benefits, believing that drinking high-pH "healthy water" is a shortcut to longevity? Behind this globally popular drinking water trend lie numerous scientific misconceptions obscured by marketing rhetoric. While electrolyzed reduced water (ERW) does contain biologically active molecular hydrogen, equating it simply with a "universal health elixir" lacks scientific basis and may even pose unexpected health risks.

The Dual Nature of Electrolyzed Water

Electrolyzed water machines split water through an electrolysis process. The anode produces electrolyzed oxidizing water (EOW), which contains chlorine and hypochlorous acid, giving it strong oxidizing properties. This type is strictly for medical and industrial disinfection and is not drinkable. The cathode produces electrolyzed reduced water (ERW), whose core value lies in dissolved molecular hydrogen (H₂). Research confirms that ERW's biological benefits come entirely from hydrogen—not from so-called "micro-clusters," "alkaline detoxification," or "altered water structure."

The Hidden Dangers of High-pH Water

Many consumers blindly pursue "strong alkalinity," even adjusting flow rates or adding minerals to create water with pH levels exceeding 10 (often called "purple water"). However, excessive alkalization of drinking water can lead to serious consequences:

  • Gastric Acid Neutralization and Nutrient Absorption Issues: Stomach acid serves as the body's first defense against pathogens and is crucial for mineral and vitamin absorption. Long-term consumption of high-pH water disrupts gastric acid balance, increases intestinal infection risks, and may impair absorption of calcium, magnesium, and other trace elements.
  • Hyperkalemia Risk: Multiple clinical observations show that individuals with impaired kidney function experience abnormal serum potassium levels after drinking high-pH electrolyzed water. This may be due to potassium release from damaged cells or compensatory mechanisms during acid-base balance regulation.
  • Heavy Metal Contamination: Electrolyzed water machines typically use platinum-coated titanium electrodes. When devices operate long-term, encounter highly mineralized water, or experience excessive current, electrode coatings may shed microscopic particles. Platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) and other potential heavy metal contaminants can damage liver and kidney function and even interfere with cardiac electrophysiology.

Navigating the Hydrogen Water Market Safely

ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) is often misleadingly marketed as a water quality indicator. Since pH significantly affects ORP readings, high-pH water can show deceptively attractive "negative potential" even with minimal hydrogen content. Therefore, relying on ORP meters to gauge hydrogen concentration is highly inaccurate.

To ensure both safety and health benefits, consider these guidelines:

  • pH Limit: Drinking water pH should never exceed 9.8. Deep purple test results indicate pH above 10—immediately stop consumption.
  • Hydrogen Concentration: Molecular hydrogen is the only active beneficial component. Use specialized hydrogen testing equipment rather than pH strips or ORP meters.
  • Regular Maintenance: Electrolysis chambers easily accumulate calcium deposits, which hinder hydrogen dissolution and cause electrode overheating (accelerating metal leaching). Periodic deep cleaning with weak acidic solutions like citric acid is essential.
  • Equipment Selection: For those seeking hydrogen's benefits, dedicated hydrogen water generators or neutral-pH hydrogen infusion devices now exist. These provide high hydrogen concentrations while avoiding the physiological burdens of alkaline water.

Electrolyzed reduced water is not a panacea. While pursuing hydrogen's antioxidant benefits, consumers must remain vigilant about improper device maintenance and the health consequences of excessive alkalization. Scientific hydration begins with rejecting the blind pursuit of high pH.
